Surfing
Surfing is one of the most popular sports in the Algarve, and the Aljezur area, about 45 minutes from the quinta, is one of Portugal's best known surf destinations. To be clear, we mean wave surfing here, not windsurfing, though there's plenty of that nearby too. Beginners can catch their first waves in calmer, forgiving conditions, while experienced surfers will find plenty of heavier breaks to test themselves against.
Where to Surf
- Praia do Amado, near Carrapateira, is one of the region's true surf hotspots, with consistent waves that suit a wide range of levels. Several surf schools operate right on the beach if you want lessons or a board rental.
- Praia de Arrifana, also near Aljezur, offers a beautiful bay with a more relaxed atmosphere, backed by dramatic cliffs. A great spot for both surfing and just soaking up the scenery afterward.
- Praia do Beliche, near Sagres, is a favourite among more experienced surfers, known for its powerful waves and wild Atlantic feel.
- Praia do Martinhal, also near Sagres, has calmer, clearer water and is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers as well as families.
A Bit of Trivia
The waters around Alvor are said to be where kitesurfing first took off in the region, so if you're curious about kitesurfing rather than traditional surfing, that stretch of coast is worth a look too.
